The Ecuadorian authorities closed a regional airport due to the spread of ash clouds from the eruption of the Sangay volcano, two hundred kilometers south of the capital, Quito.

And Agence France-Presse quoted the Directorate General of Ecuadorian Civil Aviation as saying in a tweet today that "the presence of ashes in the air" forced the Directorate to (suspend the activities of the Guayaquil airport), the capital of the Guayas Province, noting that the airport itself was closed last September for the same reasons.

The National Authority for Risk and Emergency Management in Ecuador told the Ecuadorian authorities that five of the 24 provinces in Ecuador were affected by the volcanic ashfall.

The state of the yellow alert, which symbolizes the level of danger, was announced in the southern Chimboraso province, which has half a million people, and is one of the regions that deployed the Integrated Security Service.

The latest report of the National Institute of Geophysics in charge of monitoring seismic activity and the volcano indicated that ash emissions were observed from Sangai volcano up to two kilometers above the crater.

According to the Institute of Geophysics, the Sangay Volcano, which is covered by snow, is 5230 meters high, one of the many active volcanoes in Ecuador, and it is in a state of constant activity.
