The European Parliament on Thursday urged the member states of the European Union to recognize the continuity of the opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela.

The resolution, endorsed by 391 of the 678 MEPs who participated in the session, includes a statement in which the European body does not recognize “neither the legitimacy nor the legality of the National Assembly established on January 5, 2021”.

This pronouncement of the legislative body follows the statement issued on January 6 by the representative of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in which he defined Guaidó as the outgoing president of the National Assembly elected in 2015. The information caused controversy among different European media and political representatives because they understood it as a withdrawal of support for the opposition leader.

Despite the resolution, it should be noted that so far 25 of the 27 countries that make up the community bloc continue to recognize Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela.

Guaidó, for his part, thanked the European Parliament for its support on his Twitter account.

"The legitimate dialogue of Venezuela is in this Parliament, focused on achieving free and fair elections," he published this Thursday.
