We will have to wait a little longer to know the epilogue of the conflict of TV rights between the Professional Football League (LFP) and Canal +.

The two parties met this Tuesday morning before the 15th chamber of the Paris Commercial Court on lot 3 of Ligue 1. After listening to the belligerents, Judge Nathalie Dostert decided to put the case under advisement.

The decision will be made on March 11.

Even if the Vivendi group channel had recovered in January the broadcasting of all the matches of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 until the end of the season, following a negotiation by mutual agreement, then passing for the savior of football French, it still contested the LFP's desire to only put into play the lots held by Mediapro, which therefore excluded lot 3 (two L1 matches per day).

Lot that the broadcaster acquired from beIN Sports in 2019 for 330 million euros and that he now wants to put back on the market.

An amount now considered excessive.

🚨 The @LFPfr and the @canalplusgroupe announce a global agreement concerning the audiovisual rights of @ Ligue1UberEats and @ Ligue2BKT for the 2020-2021 season.

"The value of lot 3 is overvalued due to the irrational behavior of Mediapro during the call for tenders," pleaded mid-January the chairman of the group's management board, Maxime Saada.

It is essential to remember that the lots were awarded successively, so that when lot 3 was awarded, all the players knew that they had not won the first two lots.

Lot 3 was therefore the last chance to leave with a premium package.

The offers are therefore artificially soaring.

"

For the LFP, no legal link between the different lots

Canal + lawyers have defended the idea that after the Mediapro fiasco, all rights must be put back on the market.

Associated with beIN Sports, they demanded that the LFP collect the lots and put them back on the market for a future call for tenders at the end of the season.

Represented by Clifford Chance, the LFP defended itself by recalling that there was no legal link between the different lots at the time of the 2018 call for tenders, that they were all distinct and autonomous and that there is therefore no reason to put all the lots back on the market but only those of the defaulting operator Mediapro.

If the court ruled in favor of the LFP, the latter could launch a consultation on only 80% of the matches, with the assurance of keeping the 332 million euros of the lot 3. A negotiation by mutual agreement will also be possible with the broadcasters. interested.

Which could be summed up as… Canal +.

The historic football channel in France has also filed another complaint against the LFP before the Competition Authority for "abuse of a dominant position".

But this judgment should not be successful for six months.

Finally, the Bolloré group channel is claiming 46 million euros after the rescheduling of several matches during the yellow vests demonstrations.

A case that should be judged at the start of the next school year.
