Handball World Cup: This is how Germany gets into the quarter-finals

Lost against Hungary and Spain, now the DHB selection threatens the World Cup. Unless a small handball miracle happens - that would have to happen in order for the team to get ahead.

"It is said that hope dies last," said Germany's national coach Alfred Gíslason after the defeat against European champions Spain: "Realistically speaking, we have to be very lucky." It looks like the first World Cup tournament of the Icelandic with the German national team already end up with the end in the main round.

After the 28:32 against Spain, the German handball players have only minimal chances of making it into the World Cup quarter-finals.

The DHB itself had given this round as the target for the young, inexperienced team that has to get by in Egypt without numerous regular workers.

In the main round group II, the DHB selection took fourth place with 2: 4 points behind Hungary (6: 0), Spain (5: 1) and Poland (4: 2).

Only the first two teams progress.

Nevertheless, the advance into the knockout round can succeed.

Granted, it is unlikely and more of a mathematical possibility.

The team of national coach Gíslason would have to win their remaining games against Brazil on Saturday (8.30 p.m.; TV: ZDF) and Poland on Monday (8.30 p.m.; TV: ARD).

That will be an enormous hurdle, especially the Polish selection is in good shape at this World Cup and only just lost to Spain in the preliminary round.

And even if the German handball players win both games, they would not be able to advance on their own.

One of these cases should also occur:

  • when Hungary loses its remaining games against Poland and Spain.

In this case there would be a three-way comparison of the teams from Hungary, Poland and Germany with the same points, from which the team with the best goal difference would advance.

Since the DHB selection lost with only one goal against Hungary (28:29), they would have to win more against Poland with one goal than Poland beats Hungary.

  • when Spain loses to Hungary and outsider Uruguay.

However, this seems impossible due to the low performance of the South Americans (zero points, minus 69 goals).

After the duel in Spain, captain Uwe Gensheimer no longer looked particularly confident, he said: "We owe it to ourselves to decide the last two games for ourselves, because we have to find the motivation."
