REPORT - The coming of Pope Francis is a “blessing” for these inhabitants of the first Christian city of Iraq who have known years of wars and persecutions.

From our special correspondent in Qaraqosh

“It was August 6.

I knew they would arrive and that I had to go, but I'm too awake to run.

In the street, people were screaming and crying at each other, cars honking their horns, rolling on the sidewalks.

If they had, I think they would have climbed the walls! ”

From that night of terror in the summer of 2014, Maryam forgot nothing.

From the height of her 76 years, while walking, therefore, and like all the inhabitants of the first Christian city of Iraq, she fled.

There were eight of us in the neighbor's car and the air conditioning he had insisted on taking crushed my legs, ”

she recalls.

For three years, with her sons and three grandchildren, Maryam lived in a caravan in the Ashti 2 camp in Erbil.

She is proud to say that she was
