At about 11 am today (4th), the police received a report saying that at the junction of Shanghai Street and Mong Kok Road in Mong Kok, two passers-by were slightly injured by an electric bicycle and refused to be sent to hospital after being treated by an ambulance.

Police arrived at the scene and stopped the electric bicycle and the driver involved. The male driver was arrested.

The police are investigating the incident.

According to the existing laws, it is illegal to drive electric movable tools on local roads.

In mid-December last year, the police cracked down on illegal driving of electric movable tools, including electric scooters and electric bicycles, in many districts in the southern New Territories. During the operation, a total of 17 electric scooters, 15 electric bicycles and an electric four-wheel skateboard were seized. .

At that time, the police reiterated that electric movable tools are not suitable for common use with ordinary cars on the road, nor are they suitable for use on sidewalks or cycling tracks.

Anyone using unregistered and licensed electric movable tools on roads, footpaths and cycle tracks may violate the Road Traffic Ordinance, Chapter 3374 of the Laws of Hong Kong and other related laws.

Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of HK$10,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
