A tsunami warning was issued on Friday after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake near Kermadec, uninhabited Pacific islands that are part of New Zealand, authorities said.
The earthquake, which apparently did not claim any casualties, was preceded by tremors of 7.4 and 6.9 in the same region.It struck a thousand kilometers from the New Zealand coast in 8:28 a.m. local time (19:28 GMT Thursday), according to the USGS Observatory.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of potentially dangerous waves in New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, the Cook Islands, Fiji, as well as Wallis and Futuna, among others.
New Zealand has ordered an evacuation in some areas.
