The Europeans have abandoned their resolution against Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in an attempt to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table with the United States, a step hailed by the Islamic Republic.

The European countries "

have decided, with the full support of the United States, that the best way

" to move forward "

is to refrain from presenting the draft resolution,

" Ned Price explained.

"

We are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors

," he added, Iran having agreed to technical meetings with the

UN nuclear

"

gendarme

" to clarify several outstanding issues. .

Former US President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which was supposed to prevent Tehran from acquiring the atomic bomb, and reinstated all US sanctions.

New President Joe Biden has said he is ready to return to it "

if

" Iran also comes back to the restrictions on its nuclear program, from which it has begun to free itself.

Washington is calling for a direct meeting to begin negotiations on this mutual return, but the Iranians seem to demand a prior lifting of at least some sanctions, or in any case a commitment from the Americans to lift sanctions following a first meeting.

"

Iran should not expect anything, because we have made it clear that what we are ready for is a constructive dialogue

," replied Ned Price.

This is the proposal that is on the table.

At such a meeting, "

we can discuss the various issues at stake,

" added the spokesperson.
