An excess weight that is felt on the scales and which is also an additional risk for Covid-19, as well as for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, significantly increasing the likelihood of negative outcomes.

It is the one linked to obesity, to which the world day is dedicated on the 4th of March.

This year the date is even more important, considering also that lockdowns and movement restrictions have led to a generalized increase in weight among people around the world.

In the US, the New York Times reports that 76% of people gained up to 8 kilos during the first lockdown, 63% of these now have the loss of excess kilos as a priority.

And also in Italy, according to some data released by Coldiretti last October, 44% has increased in weight due to Covid, between smart working, the restrictions imposed by the lockdown and the greater tendency to devote themselves to cooking.

The situation seems to worsen for obese people, especially for those placed in smart working and layoffs, which in 54% of cases recorded an average weight increase of 4 kilograms.

There are about six million Italians with obesity and 25 million overweight and, as in the rest of the world, it is racing to apps for diets and fitness.

According to Stock Apps, the fitness app market will grow 48.44% annually for the next four years, reaching 5.72 billion in 2024.

The user base is also increasing, which in the next four years will exceed the 1 billion mark.

The day, under the banner of 'Every body needs everybody ", every body needs everyone, is an opportunity to raise awareness, fight against stigma, and draw attention to treatment options: if bariatric surgery remains a important solution (interventions have however decreased due to the Covid emergency by 30% according to Sicob, the Italian Society of Obesity Surgery) an alternative is offered by technologies such as gastric balloons. In particular, an innovation introduced by American Allurion Technologies in 2017 and currently used in more than 40 countries is called Elipse Balloon. It is an implantable and removable balloon without endoscopy or anesthesia, safe in 16 weeks. The implantation procedure is outpatient, painless and lasts 20 minutes without the use of sedatives. Next to the balloon, an 'intelligent' scale and a smartwatch are included in the weight loss program.
