An empty house that is about to be demolished: the people in charge at the Peitingen fire brigade thought it was made for a realistic training scenario.

What they didn’t expect: In the neighborhood, some people don’t have much time for the evening exercises of the volunteers.

Peiting

- Since the beginning of January, the Peiting fire brigade has regularly moved to Bergwerkstrasse to property at number 3 in the past few weeks.

Admittedly, there was no imminent danger in any of the missions.

Rather, it was about rehearsing an emergency.

The house in question near the roundabout has been empty for a long time.

The days of the aging property are numbered.

As reported, the Raiffeisenbank Pfaffenwinkel, who not only owns the building but also the neighboring free property, is planning to build a four-story residential and commercial building on the site.

When Klaus Straub, who works for the bank himself, found out about the plans, the commander of the Peiting fire brigade immediately became interested.

He asked his employer if the military could use the old apartment building for training purposes until it was demolished.

At the Raiffeisenbank, Straub ran into open doors with his request.

They agreed immediately, says authorized representative Elisabeth Gruber.

"Such an opportunity rarely presents itself to the fire brigade."

Residential house well suited for realistic exercise scenarios

In fact, an operational exercise on such an object can be made much more realistic than it is possible, for example, at a fire station or on the premises of a company, explains Straub.

For example, you can practice with filled hose lines because you don't have to take any water damage into account in the event of a leak.

The handling of full hoses is completely different for the emergency services than when laying dry lines through the house, says Straub.

It is also not a problem if a window breaks or a wall gets a scratch in the course of the exercise.

But not everyone apparently likes that the fire brigade has temporarily chosen the old building as the new training location.

"Unfortunately, we received complaints from four residents," says Straub, disappointed.

They complained about the noise of the evening exercises and the unpleasant smell from the smoke used.

The fire brigade had smoked the building several times in the past few weeks in order to rehearse various deployment scenarios.

A fog machine was used for this, which is also used in discos, explains Straub.

In terms of health, this is completely harmless.

The commander cannot understand the complaint about the smell.

"The next building is over 30 meters away, which is completely incomprehensible to me."

As far as the noise is concerned, it cannot be avoided to a certain extent, admits the commander, with a view to the running engines of the large emergency vehicles and the operation of the pumps.

That is also why one made sure that the exercises were finished by 9 p.m.

However, one has to rely on the evening time, emphasizes Straub.

After all, the fire fighters do their voluntary work in their free time.

The fire brigade wrote to the residents in a letter

Straub has summarized all of this in a letter that has been distributed to 60 households in the immediate vicinity over the past few days.

In it, the commandant announced that in future the smoke would not be used and that there would be a break from practice until March 21st.

"We want to take the pressure off the matter," says Straub, even if the criticism came from only a small part of the residents.

The commander also shared the letter on the fire brigade's Facebook page - triggering a wave of solidarity.

In numerous comments, users expressed their incomprehension about the complaints of the residents, including Mayor Peter Ostenrieder: “It is a pity that we now even need such a statement in Peiting.

We all benefit from the high level of commitment and competence of our fire brigade, so I can only emphasize once again that I only welcome the exercises, ”writes the town hall chief.
