The new pneumonia epidemic has lasted for almost a year, and citizens have been forced to get used to the new normal of life.

Citizens working from home (WFH) have more time and can finally practice what they have always wanted to do. Maybe try a new gas frying recipe, or bake an old-fashioned cake. Some people choose to record a Podcast (podcast). , Express what you think in your heart with your voice.

Diana Li, who has always had a dream of DJ, launched her first episode of Podcast in September 2020.

She believes that Podcast equipment and production costs are not high, and the threshold is lower than that of YouTubers. As an office worker, she can also use her spare time to write, record, and produce programs.

She also said that although Podcast does not provide listeners with phone-in like radio stations, it can interact with listeners on platforms such as IG, and the channel has even been ranked first in the local iTunes "interest".

Diana, who is currently working as a youth in an NGO, was frustrated when she was in high school. Fortunately, she was accompanied by a radio program. After hearing DJ enlighten the audience through the beacon program, she had a DJ dream for her. She took counseling and psychology in college, hoping to be like a radio program. Solve the audience’s life puzzles by talking.

However, in the past ten years, she has tried repeatedly to find a job and participated in the DJ training courses of Radio Hong Kong and universities. She has never been able to enter the recording studio as a professional DJ.

Diana said that it takes about three nights to produce an episode, usually after work, to write, record and edit in the Studio in Kwun Tong.

In August last year, due to a reminder from the mobile phone Siri (iPhone built-in artificial intelligence assistant), Diana opened the Podcast application built into the phone. It turned out that there was another way to realize the DJ dream, so the first episode of the show was launched in September without any delay. .

Diana is setting up a channel "Broadcasting" under the name of her own foreign name. She admits that she is still in the "modulo stage" and the content shared is mostly mental journey. She tries to use the theory of counseling to communicate with the audience and share her Take what you have learned in courses such as narrative therapy and film.

The channel once topped the local iTunes "interests" list

Diana once produced an episode "For the 27-year-old me" as a birthday gift to herself, interviewing friends of different ages, and asking them to say something to her 27-year-old self.

This episode was very popular with listeners and helped her channel to be number one on the local iTunes "interests" list.

She said that she is very yearning for the "New Banana Club" on the beacon radio show, where DJs can accompany the audience out of frustration and establish a "close relationship" with the audience.

Although Podcast is not as accessible to listeners as radio stations, it is possible to interact with listeners as much as possible through platforms such as Instagram.

Hong Kong people work long hours, but Diana personally demonstrated that office workers can also use their spare time to produce shows.

She said that it takes about three nights to produce an episode, usually after work, to write, record and edit in the Studio in Kwun Tong.

She also purchased dedicated recording equipment and microphones for Podcasts to improve sound quality.

But if the sound sounds more natural, Diana thinks that some technical tests are needed. For example, the ending sound does not need to be particularly improved, the volume cannot be loud or small, and not too much "Er...Er..." ... "Anyway, you have to be honest with yourself." What she has learned from DJ training courses for many years has finally come to fruition.

In recent years, Podcast has set off a boom in Europe and the United States, attracting major companies such as Spotify to join the wave.

In neighboring Taiwan, Podcast-related companies have also emerged, such as Firstory, a startup that specializes in Podcast hosting services, and SoundOn, which provides hosting services and player platforms. Podcaster (podcasters) also have Communication group.

But in Hong Kong, Podcast is still a niche hobby, and both Podcaster and the audience are small.

Diana said that according to her observation, there are not many Podcast hosts in the local community, but she will meet other hosts through Instagram.

She is pleased to see that Podcast hosts are more willing to exchange the technology of program production and promotion, not as competitive as YouTubers.

Comparing Podcast and YouTube, Diana believes that Podcast requires less technology, equipment and production time than YouTube, and because it does not need to show up, it can maintain privacy and is easier to get started. However, the Podcast platform currently does not provide much listening statistics. .

She believes that the recent yellow label incident on YouTube will also cause some YouTubers to switch to Podcasts.
