The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces communicated through its Twitter account that

the Navy and Air Force

were put on alert

"as a preventive measure in the event of new earthquakes."

It did so after the 7.1 magnitude movement that shook Antarctica.

This Saturday, a major earthquake shook Antarctica and the Chilean authorities issued an emergency alert asking citizens to leave the beach areas.

Later, it became known that this alarm was a mistake.

Despite this, the Armed Forces of the Argentine Republic affirmed that "the Antarctic Joint Command reports that the Argentine bases in Antarctica

are without news in terms of personnel and material

, after the recent earthquake that occurred on the white continent."

And they added: "It is also reported that the Argentine Navy and the Air Force have been put on alert as a preventive measure in the event of new seismic movements."

The earthquake in Antarctica

took place 216 kilometers northeast of the O'Higgins base

, the largest that Chile has on the frozen continent.

For this reason, the Air Force also reported that they made all their resources available to help the Frei Base in Chile as well as any other that has been affected by the earthquake.

Minutes after the earthquake, due to a technical failure, a request was made on the Chilean coast to "abandon the beach area of the Antarctic territory" due to the possible arrival of a tsunami.

The tsunami alert was turned on in the cell phones of the rest of the population causing great fear, especially in people who are vacationing on the central coast.

The local channels broadcast images of entire families fleeing the beaches and climbing the hills and of citizens crowding into service stations to fill up car tanks.

However, the agency should have apologized for the error.

"Attention. We reiterate that no evacuation has been declared for the coastline at the national level, only for the beach area of the Antarctic territory," insisted the institution dependent on the Ministry of the Interior on its Twitter account.

Located in the so-called Cordón de Fuego del Pacífico, Chile, it is considered

one of the most seismic countries in the world

.

On February 27, 2010, it suffered a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the city of Concepción that left more than 500 dead.

60 years ago, this country suffered the most powerful earthquake ever recorded, measuring 9.6 magnitude, in the city of Valdivia, in southern Chile.
