The longest tunnel in Belgium takes the name of Annie Cordy

The Belgian singer, who died last September at the age of 92, won in front of 14 other female personalities after an internet vote.


The longest tunnel in Belgium, in Brussels, will be renamed after the name of Belgian singer Annie Cordy, who died last September at the age of 92, the Brussels Region announced on Monday, following an internet vote.

The interpreter of "

Tata Yoyo

" and "

La bonne du curé

" won in front of 14 other female personalities, such as the resistant Andrée De Jongh, the Brussels-born novelist Marguerite Yourcenar, the Belgian jurist and feminist Marie Popelin and d other figures like Marie Curie, Rosa Parks or Simone Veil.

It is Annie Cordy who clearly stands out among the 15 candidates with more than 22% of the votes

", underlined in a press release Bruxelles Mobilité, at the end of this ballot.

Among the streets of the Belgian capital which bear the name of a person, barely 6.1% bear the name of a woman and 93.9% that of a man, recalls the Brussels public service.

This tunnel, known for its traffic jams, was until now called "

Leopold II tunnel

", named after the ex-king, a controversial figure in Belgium's colonial past.
