The puzzle of the bas-relief decorations of the mythical liner “Normandy”

All the lacquered and gilded panels of Jean Dunand, coming from the mythical

Normandy,

are not sold at a high price.

Between the originals, the reductions in the form of small decorative plaques (several are kept at the Le Havre Museum and were restored in 2015) and those completed for their reassembly in other liners by his son Bernard, the distinction is complex.

It is a matter of connoisseurs, as the vagueness remains.

So let's go back, to understand, at the beginning of the 1930s, when the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique called on many artists and craftsmen to carry out the interior decoration of this legendary liner, a veritable embassy of French art linking Le Havre to New York in four days.

The most spectacular order was entrusted to the famous Jean Dunand, who produced six large groups (6 m high by 5.80 m wide each) with a humanist theme for the smoking room for the first classes.
