We will live and die with Wilbkin, but otherwise

Close wins for Maccabi Tel Aviv this season:

84:86 over Real Madrid: Tyler Dorsey scores 5 of the last 6 points.

67:68 In Barcelona: Othello Hunter scores a winning basket, 13 seconds from the end.

63:67 In Vitoria: Tyler Dorsey scores the last 4 points.

76:81 on Red Star Belgrade: Elijah Bryant scores 5 of the last 6 points.

87:89 Out on Himki: Tyler Dorsey forces overtime in three, 9 seconds from the end.

"Scotty Wilbkin is our leader. We will live and die with him," Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Yannis Sapropoulos said recently.

It's hard to say he was wrong: Wilbkin is the most consistent star Elijah has had since Devin Smith, and the numbers prove he's the club's biggest scorer since Anthony Parker.

When the Yellows get into a close game, the rivals focus on him, send him their best guard, and sometimes wrap him up in another player or two.

And they know why.

Last season he defeated Olympiacos by a three-pointer, and Anadolu Zero by two penalty shots;

Other games were decided by him even earlier, when he entered the zone in the fourth quarter.

But this season the picture has been reversed.

Week after week (week after week), Maccabi reaches the final minute, when the tenths are already running on the right side of the clock, and there is no decision yet.

Two-thirds of its games, 14 of 21, ended with a gap of five points and below.

Wilbkin was always there on the field, and always caught the attention of the rival.

When the Yellows went to him, and sometimes did so in a way that was too transparent and stenciled, they usually lost.

And it's not that the star in the No. 1 jersey is alone on the floor, or that there are no players around him who are capable of producing points.

Tyler Dorsey scored Sally Clutch in the close victories over Moscow, Basconia and last night (Thursday) against Real Madrid;

Othello Hunter was responsible for the winning basket in Barcelona;

Elijah Bryant went up in the closing minutes against Red Star Belgrade.

The only five games in which Maccabi Tel Aviv won the season in the closing seconds have one thing in common: While the defense focused on Wilbkin, someone else took advantage of this and brought salvation.

"We will live and die with Scotty," said Sapropolus, and was not mistaken, because without him - the others would have a hard time getting a clear look or finding themselves close to the basket.

"We will live and die" - this does not mean that the last ball must be in the hands of the star.

2. Least shots and losses, most assists

Wilbkin's dominance for the Yellows has often been similar in recent years to that of Alexei Sheved in the Moscow Khimki (with all the necessary reservations), but yesterday the guard made sure to be as far away from Swede as possible, and from the moment Pablo Lasso shot Swedish assassin Jeffrey Taylor. Himself on the game.

Wilbkin, and it must be said to his credit, equaled his season-high record in a number of shots from the field, taking five of those in 24 minutes - eight less than average;

He equaled his season record in assists (8), and also equaled the lowest number of losses he has had this season (only 1).

And all this was made possible, of course, thanks to the big night in Tyler Dorsey's Euroleague career.

Sapropoulos may have felt uncomfortable with the quintet he put in front of Real Madrid's guard squad.

Within a minute and 25 seconds he had already called for a first replacement - his earliest this season - and put Yuval Sussman in place of Angelo Cloiaro.

59 seconds later made a second change;

Elijah Bryant saw time and time again the backs of Taylor and Alberto Abelda on the way to the basket, and after also missing and losing a ball, he made way for the star on duty.

It took exactly one minute for Dorsey to thread the first three-pointer over Carlos Allussen's head.

And this American-Greek, as is well known, is so dependent on his debut shot every night and evening.

His 36 index points, a record for a player in Maccabi Tel Aviv this season, place him on a respectable list;

In the last five years, only Sergio Rodriguez, Mike James, Shane Larkin and Afi Yudo have reached such a monstrous number against Real.

In the last attack, when the Blancos needed a basket with a winery scent, they missed more than ever the two main clutch experts on the squad, Sergio Yui and Rudy Fernandez, who were left injured in Madrid.

Though few people were present in the hall, it was clear to everyone who would take the crucial shot;

But Jesse Carroll, one who had already defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv with his own hands, was not given the opportunity to throw the orange object at the hoop.

It's not that he did not try.

It's just that instead of getting the ball through a block or in a round, he is the one who led the ball, and invited the defensive pressure to it.

It's lost.

As with the transparencies, you know.

3. Within touching distance of eighth place

And here, in fact, is the magic secret of the Euroleague: what seemed so bleak just ten days ago, after the unnecessary home loss to Olympiacos, has been forgotten. In the last two years, Maccabi Tel Aviv has fought for a ticket to the playoffs without beating Real, and now, after finally removing the spell, it stands at ten wins; The team that will be ranked at the end of this round in the coveted eighth place will have 11. The

coming week may largely determine where the Yellows are headed towards the final straight of the season. Beyond Picantry in a meeting with two Turkish teams, Fenerbahce in Istanbul and Anadolu Efes in Tel Aviv, within 48 hours - these are two that are emerging as two direct rivals at the entrance to the top of the table.

To the attention of reader T. Dorsey: Rodriguez, James, Larkin and Yudo would not have allowed themselves to fall to five or eight points after such a big performance against the Blancos. It is said of you that you are unstable, and inconsistent, and that your record game will inevitably lead to a slump. This is true?
