With his band ZZ Top he became one of the best-known representatives of blues rock: musicians reacted with sadness and sadness to the death of bassist Dusty Hill.
“Rest in peace,” wrote Ozzy Osbourne on Twitter.
His thoughts are with Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard, the other band members, as well as "all ZZ top fans in the world".
Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley called Hill a gentleman and an icon.
The US singer Bootsy Collins spoke of a "giant legend of the rock & roll empire" that has now been lost.
Michael Peter Balzary aka Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also called Hill a “real rocker”.
And the rock singer Lita Ford expressed her "deepest sympathy": "Great artists never die".
Dusty Hill died on Wednesday at his ranch in Texas at the age of 72.
With his band ZZ Top and albums such as "Tres Hombres" and "El Loco" he became famous especially in the seventies and eighties.
In 2019 the band celebrated their 50th anniversary.
Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard had already said goodbye on their website on the anniversary of Hill's death: "We are saddened to hear that our colleague Dusty Hill passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, Texas," it says.
"We and legions of ZZ top fans around the world will miss your unwavering presence, your good nature and your ongoing commitment."
