"Always, Luis": the love of a politician for his country (Review)

"Siempre Luis" arrives, a documentary with a Latin soul 1:25

One day life made me choose between covering political news, my first great journalistic passion, or show business.

I have been working on the latter for two decades and although for some they are very opposite poles of information, after having seen the documentary "Always, Luis" I verified that, in fact, my inclinations were not contrary.

"Siempre, Luis", which premieres on CNN En Español this Sunday, June 20, is an account of the efforts of political advisor Luis A. Miranda Jr. to help, through art, his devastated home island of Puerto Rico , after the impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017.

But what is this relationship between politicians and artists?

Miranda, who from very early in her career has organized and promoted the vote among the Latino community in New York, her “second homeland”, applied that same conviction and dedication to achieve that the famous Broadway musical “Hamilton”, created by her Award-winning son Lin-Manuel Miranda, will travel to the island and there he will become an instrument of collection of millions and millions of dollars that will help the reconstruction of his country.

“(My father) noticed early on that politics and entertainment are very similar in one respect, especially Broadway.

You are trying to convince many people to spend money that they are not going to get back, ”says Lin-Manuel Miranda, when in the documentary he compares raising funds for a political campaign with financing a theatrical show.

Although the documentary "Siempre, Luis" highlights the love and commitment of a politician for his nation and his family, it also becomes a love letter that his famous son presents, through his testimony, to his father in lifetime.
