"Changing Chef": Another Personality Cult of Cooks | Israel today

2022-07-05T05:17:27.585Z

The network's new reality show continues to sell us chefs as superstars whose fat goes before them, even though we did not really taste the fish dish with the pasta in the tomato sauce for 220 shekels •

It's all a matter of definitions, and sometimes you need a different name for them to look at you differently.

A hair stylist is still a talker, and even the difference between a cook and a chef does not really exist.

The difference is only in the degree and in public relations.

In the last decade, television has done a huge service to the culinary world, intensifying the meaning of the term chef.

Through the screen we learned that chefs are actually sensory artists, food designers, superstars with sex appeal in quantities.

But in general most Israelis have never tasted food that came out of the hands of those successful chefs.

There is nothing to argue about taste and smell, but we eat the chefs with our eyes and trust the TV that will define for us what quality is.

The cult of personality is beneficial to both parties, and television in turn bases its character on various reality shows.

"Changing Chef", for example, chose for us the "leading and successful" chefs in Israel;

So she asked to switch restaurants between them for a day and allowed a free hand to make changes.

The uninteresting twist at the end: Every chef has to decide whether to implement the proposed changes or not.

In the premiere episode, which was broadcast last night on the network, Segev Moshe ("Segbart" restaurant) and Yaron Shalev ("Toto" restaurant) were replaced.

Two different schools, two opposing types.

Quail was presented as meticulous and arrogant, selling fish with pasta in tomato sauce for NIS 220;

On the other hand, Segev played the compromising boyfriend, who has to be smart and take selfies with everyone.

Even a "changing chef" was swept away after blind admiration for chefs.

She is focused on their personal scratches, their work habits, their cooking methods.

It crams everything into pita, providing a load of happenings in an hour-long episode.

But because she's mesmerized by chefs, she misses the disgruntled shift manager or Segev's employee who admires Quail.

Honestly, not a hit to be a chef as told on TV.

It is physically and mentally draining work.

Restaurants open and close.

And yet, through the screen everything is sparkling and delicious, and the restaurants are always successful.

At the end of the episode, the "changing chef" showed off the changes in their restaurants that the chefs made following the filming, but ignored the fact that "Segbert" closed six months ago.
