"He had very difficult times after the Tour": Jonas Vingegaard, a new status difficult to assume

The Danish champion has not participated in any race since his coronation in Paris on July 24, after an epic duel with Tadej Pogacar. His

As we know, the 25-year-old Dane has never had a good time haranguing the crowd or multiplying media solicitations.

Calling Jonas Vingegaard a beast of the stage would be a bit like saying that this Tour de France 2022 left us hungry, too soft, without suspense.

Since July 24, and his triumphant arrival on the Champs-Élysées, the leader of the Jumbo Visma has however had no other choice.

Winning the Tour France, moreover at the end of a fight like his against Tadej Pogacar, propels him into another dimension and requires him to fulfill his duties as a star.

Three weeks later, this work has apparently left its mark.

Dane Jonas Vingegaard experienced "difficult times" after his Tour de France victory, the sports director of his Jumbo Visma training said on Thursday.

His absence from the Tour of Denmark, which left on Tuesday, and for the World Championships in September in Australia disappointed part of his audience.

“I understand that viewers want to see Jonas, and I spoke to him about it yesterday.

But he had very difficult moments after the Tour,” Frans Maassen told the daily Ekstra Bladet.

“We would have liked to show it in this race, but we also have to understand that it was difficult to win the Tour and with everything that followed.

Also, his presence at the start of the Danish competition would have increased the pressure around Vingegaard,” he explained.

“There is no doubt that he is well done now”

While his colleagues have resumed competition, like Primoz Roglic attacking a third Vuelta or Christophe Laporte in Denmark, the climber has not publicly commented on his absence.

"It's one thing to be physically ready, but you also have to be mentally ready," Tour of Denmark official Frank Hyldgaard told local news agency Ritzau.

After having "invested a lot" in the Grande Boucle, "there is no doubt that it is well done now", added the cyclist from Quick-Step, the Dane Michael Mørkøv to the daily Ekstra Bladet.

His return to Denmark on July 27, celebrated as a king on the forecourt of the town hall of Copenhagen, offered scenes of jubilation of rare power.

Anyone who loves nothing more than spending time with his wife Trine and his little girl Frida obviously needs time to digest them.

Our series on Jonas Vingegaard, the new boss of the Tour de France

We imagined a hat-trick from Pogacar, or the revenge of Primoz Roglic.

But few suspected that it would be him, the new king of France.

At 25, the Dane of the Jumbo-Visma, Jonas Vingegaard, won his first Tour de France.

Without really knowing him.

Here are three stories to better understand the new yellow jersey.
