Ten and a half years imprisonment for supporting the terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) and terrorist financing: That was the verdict of the Higher Regional Court of Celle against Abu Walaa a week ago.

The defender of the 37-year-old IS governor in Germany has now appealed against the decision.

This was announced by a court spokesman.

According to the judges, the hate preacher and three co-defendants between the ages of 32 and 55 radicalized young people, especially in the Ruhr area and Lower Saxony, and sent them to the IS battle areas.

Three co-defendants received prison terms of between four and eight years.

For them there were initially no revision requests from the defense, the deadline for this expires on Wednesday evening.

The federal prosecutor's office had demanded eleven and a half years imprisonment for Abu Walaa and between four and a half and ten years for the other defendants.

The defense, on the other hand, had pleaded for acquittal or significantly milder sentences.

The defendants were arrested in November 2016.

The process had dragged on for three and a half years.

Abu Walaa was the imam of the mosque of the now forbidden association "Deutschsprachiger Islamkreis Hildesheim".

A German Serb who was also accused and who received eight years' imprisonment is said to have used his apartment in Dortmund as a prayer center and also temporarily housed the jihadist Anis Amri there.

In 2016, Amri carried out an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that killed twelve people.
