"Jacket" was supposed to be the big series of the year, but it's far from it
Yes' new drama series tells the story of Etty Alon's huge embezzlement at a commercial bank, but has a hard time waking up.
True, there is action and suspense, but "embezzlement" swims in the same water over and over again.
It may be true to the story, but it does not produce interesting enough TV drama, especially when most of us already know it.

And again with you: Ten months after the usual docu-drama broadcaster "Etty Alon: The Woman Who Stole 250 Million" hit the screen in arc 12, his more pretentious sister - "Maila" - another series appears today (Thursday) seeking to track down the clerk who raises bank money, Her brother, who is immersed in gambling, Ofer Maximov, and the whirlpool of pressures that led them both to lose control in one of the most serious, if not the most severe, economic disputes in the country's history.
The series has two partners: Shira Porat, behind which are several short films, and Yotam Gandelman, who is known as one of the three creators of the controversial "Shadow of Truth", and once again rolls under his hands a sensational crime that stunned an entire country.
For both, this is the first feature project of this scale and profile, to which some particularly big names have been recruited: Dana Ivgi as Kati Alon, Yehuda Levy as Ofer Maximov, Hanan Savyon as Baal Shlomi and director Dover Kosashvili as the father of the two brothers, and also: Or Ben Melech ("The Boys"), Shalom Asaig, Uri Gabriel and others.
On the face of it, this is set to be the big series of the year.
In practice, it is far from realizing its potential.

Apart from its visual beauty - "Maila" relishes the period reconstruction of the late 90s and early 2000s, and in particular the technology of the period - the series raises several main issues.
For example, she convincingly describes the way in which the inter-family relationship pushed Alon into a corner, when she is repeatedly required to save her brother and father from themselves and pay any price for doing so.
This dynamic is presented as cruelly toxic, patriarchal and manipulative.
In doing so, the series puts Alon in a complex position, of someone who is also a victim in the story.
Another prominent theme in the series, naturally, is the portrayal of Maximov's gambling as a total illness and addiction, which gradually leads to the systematic destruction of his life.
The gameplay views in "Embezzlement" are not bad, but also one-dimensional.
Ivgi, one of the most versatile and talented actresses in Israel, plays an anxious and frightened character from herself and everything that suffers one hundred percent of the time, but is that really all there is in Alon, a man who managed to outwit a variety of professionals and colleagues for years and steal NIS 250 million?
The series has a hard time cracking other aspects of this character.
Levy, for his part, in a good display, well embodies an almost bipolar, drug-addicted character who is unable to withstand the temptations that life provides for her and herself is increasingly emptied.
To the inner world, the thoughts and dilemmas of the two characters we are not really exposed within the boundaries of the script, and it is difficult to identify with them.

The main trouble is that on the plot level, the series is having a hard time waking up. True, there is action and there is suspense, but "Embe" swims in the same water over and over again, and its first four episodes - the ones sent to journalists, out of seven in total - are almost identical in character: Maximov gambles and gets involved, he and his father manipulate Alon; Reality and stress erupt into her to the bank; And when it's under atomic pressure, it types something on the computer and solves the problem - and so on. This may be the story, but in this way it does not translate into an interesting enough TV drama.
To the detriment of the series also stands the fact that the story is known and familiar to viewers. We know what is going to happen, and not only is it clear to us the size of the pit that the three family members are digging for themselves, we see how they repeatedly fail to stop themselves, and it is also clear that there is no chance of redemption for them. This results in a lack of interest alongside endless distress, not the elements from which an exciting crime series is created.
If we look at it from above for a moment, we can see that "embezzlement" and the recurring preoccupation with the Bank for Commerce affair are part of the intense wave of Israeli television in recent years in cases of fraud, impersonation and embezzlement, along with a wave of sensational crimes.
Thus the medium endlessly addresses our deepest anxieties, flooding and presenting them incessantly.
In the face of this prey, an inevitable question arises: what is the effect of this phenomenon on a more divided and suspicious society than ever before?
Doubt if it is positive.
