The mathematician Reiss is dean of the School of Education at the Technical University of Munich. She has been coordinating the Pisa studies in Germany since 2014 and is intended for the new national research committee that is supposed to advise the ministers of education.
SPIEGEL:
Ms. Reiss, for the first time in the Pisa study you also examined students' attitudes towards issues such as poverty, gender equality, climate change and immigration.
Did any of the results surprise you?
Reiss:
I was pleased that finally those groups do well that we usually look at with a bit of concern in the Pisa results.
Young people with an immigrant background and those who do not attend a grammar school show very positive attitudes, for example when dealing with other cultures.
Other students can learn from them.
SPIEGEL:
How strongly are young people in Germany advocating global goals?
Reiss:
There is an interesting contrast.
On the one hand, nowhere else do students rate their skills in global issues such as climate change as highly as in Germany.
On the other hand, young people say less often than in other countries that they are actually involved, for example taking part in activities for environmental protection.
