The Erdinger Triathlon this time took place on a small scale due to the corona - but the joy was great.

Erding - organizers, helpers and athletes shone with the sun on Sunday at the Kronthaler Weiher in Erding.

Trisport-Erding had invited to Bavaria's first triathlon in Corona, even if only on a small scale.

500 athletes, including 100 children, had come.

"I am really proud to see the children back on the track," said stadium announcer Hartwig Thöne, who moderated the races together with world champion Daniel Unger.

The little ones born in 2014 and later were not allowed to go into the water, their triathlon quickly turned into a duathlon with running, cycling and running.

Reason: the water was too cold.

"On Saturday evening we were still over 20 degrees, but Sunday morning it was only 17.4 degrees, and the children are not allowed in the water," explained Trisport chairman Simone Blumoser.

Therefore, wetsuits were compulsory for the young people.

Much to the horror of a desperate father who didn't have one for his son.

But the organizers helped: A short call from presenter Thöne, a “loan neo” was there and the boy was allowed to start.

"We are all so happy that we are finally starting again and that we are blessed with the weather," enthused Blumoser. The last few weeks have been an "extremely emotional phase" for everyone involved. “We didn't know: what is right, what is wrong?” It was also clear that nothing would work without the approval of the health department. The whole team had been looking forward to June 6th, when the new easing was announced and we could finally get started. “We then only had a week to do all of this,” emphasized Blumoser. "And we have a hygiene concept that is more restrictive than actually prescribed by the association." The best reward for her: "It's so great when you can look into bright eyes now."

The moderators, who were “happy about happy and beaming children”, saw it similarly.

Gerd Rucker, President of the Bavarian Triathlon Association, insisted on making the way from his home in Upper Palatinate, Vohenstrauss, to Erding.

"After more than a year of abstinence, finally another competition - I have goose bumps," he confessed.

And obviously many athletes had that too, regardless of whether they had to go into the deep end or not. The enthusiasm was clear to see, from the minis, who were frenetically cheered on by their parents, to the adults. With the shortened version, they had to swim 400 meters, cycle 20 kilometers and run four kilometers. Because there was a so-called “rolling start” in all races, i.e. the triathletes were sent off at intervals of around five seconds, it was not clear who would ultimately win. The first to cross the finish line didn't have to be the fastest. But since every athlete wore a time recording chip, the ranking list was created quickly, and the winners were allowed to take their medals - corona compliant - from the medal table themselves.

Meanwhile, Simon Blumoser was completely satisfied with the way the competitions went and the organization ran smoothly.

"Shining eyes, great atmosphere, I'm so proud of our whole team," she enthused.

The winners:

In the men's

category, Lukas Krämer from Schongau won (55:11 minutes) ahead of Marchelo Kunzelman Loza from Regensburg (55:19) and Jakob Heindl from Wasserburg (55:24).

In the women's

category, Sarah Schönfelder from Grassau (61:18) won ahead of Malden Kappeler from Cologne (62:03) and Maria Paulig from Bayreuth (62:16).
