It is more than a recipe book that Tegernsee native Carolin Kotke has now published: she shows what the right food can do.

In the interview she tells more about it.

Tegernsee

– “Somebody has to stand up and say that the solution isn't another pill.

The solution is broccoli.” Carolin Kotke begins her new book “Eat well, feel better!” with this quote.

The 34-year-old from Tegernsee is thus presenting the second work on the importance of food for health and well-being, following her guide “Nutrition in Cancer”, which she wrote after suffering from breast cancer herself.

Ms. Kotke, why broccoli?

Carolin Kotke

(laughs): I love broccoli.

It tastes good and has all the nutrients we need and lots of vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Pills, i.e. dietary supplements, are largely superfluous if we provide ourselves with the right nutrients in the form of food.

So why your book?

Carolin Kotke:

Yes, it's about the question "What do I eat?".

Everyone should think about this.

A healthy diet covers so much of what constitutes physical well-being.

Migraines, digestive problems, constant tiredness, skin problems - these can all be related to diet.

But my book isn't just about nutrition.

For what else?

Carolin Kotke:

Nutrition is one of five elements that are important for a healthy body and which I will go into.

The other four elements are water, so drink enough.

Breathing, and breathing properly, i.e. deeply and consciously, because we usually don’t do that enough.

Exercise, because many people don't have enough of it because of their work and mental detoxification, clearing their heads.

With the element of nutrition, you see a balanced acid-base balance as the basis.

What does that mean?

Carolin Kotke:

In order for all systems in the body to function properly, there must be a balanced relationship between acids and bases.

We should eat around 80 percent alkaline foods and 20 percent acidic ones.

Fruit, vegetables, potatoes, herbs and nuts, for example, are basic and should be rounded off with good acidifiers such as legumes and grain products.

Acidic foods that should be reduced as much as possible are animal protein, sugar, processed foods, wheat, coffee and alcohol.

So you don't have to be vegetarian or vegan, nor do you have to give up every piece of cake or ice cream?

Carolin Kotke:

No, the type of diet doesn't matter in principle.

It depends on the balance of the food.

If there is a piece of meat on the plate, four times as many vegetables and other alkaline foods should be eaten with it.

And ice cream is also allowed once in a while, you can make things up again.

I don't believe in prohibitions anyway, I would like to use the book to encourage people to find a healthier alternative for some things and to do something good for the body in the long term.

That's why it's more of a reference book than "just" a collection of recipes.

This means?

Carolin Kotke:

The first part contains a lot of basic information about our current diet, foods and what nutrients they contain.

There is also a variant for each recipe.

This should show how you can experiment with food - according to your own taste and personal needs.

The crux of cookbooks are sometimes quite exotic ingredients or spices.

Carolin Kotke:

I deliberately avoided that.

I made sure that you can get the ingredients in the classic supermarket.

I use lots of fresh vegetables that grow locally.

And many recipes are easy to prepare so that you can take them to the office.

It was also important to me that the dishes should be enjoyed by the whole family, including children.

Mothers in particular don't have time to do complicated cooking with children in everyday life.

Did that work?

Carolin Kotke: In

any case, I have already had a lot of positive feedback.

For example from mothers that the children liked it.

The best feedback is when people stick with it for a long time and don't put the book down after two or three weeks.

And that seems to be the case.
