The entry into the German media group Axel Springer ("Bild", "Welt", "Business Insider") was the latest spectacular deal by the holding company KKR in Germany. The US-Americans hold more than 35 percent of the shares, the co-head of the European private equity business,
Philipp Freise
, sits on the supervisory board. Together with
Henry McVey
, who is responsible for the company's own investments from New York, Freise explains KKR's aggressive expansion plans in an interview - and comments on the future of Axel Springer.
The conversation was held before the separation from "Bild" editor-in-chief
Julian Reichelt
as a result of new allegations of abuse of power.
KKR declined to answer additional questions about the situation or criticism of Springer CEO
Mathias Döpfner
.
The "Bild" scandal comes at a sensitive point in time: Springer is - thanks in part to the capital of KKR - facing the purchase of the US political medium "Politico", which has a strong influence in Washington.
How Döpfner deals with Reichelt's personalities and the culture in the editorial office is also receiving a lot of attention there.
In an interview Freise said: "We trust Mathias completely."
