Vienna is again the most livable city: In this year's index of the British "Economist" group, Austria's capital regained the top spot for the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic.
In the past year, the quality of life in European metropolises had fallen significantly due to the corona crisis - while the largely normal life in isolated New Zealand had given the city of Auckland first place.
With the lifting of the corona measures, cities in New Zealand, Australia and China have slipped down again in the current ranking.
Auckland, for example, is currently only in 34th place.
The latest ranking from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) was published on Thursday.
Accordingly, three German metropolises are among the biggest winners: Frankfurt am Main came in 7th this time, Hamburg in 16th place and Düsseldorf in 22nd place. The three cities each improved by around 30 places;
Vienna at 11. The Austrian city had been the leader in the EIU ranking from 2018 to 2020.
In 2021 she fell back to twelfth place.
This year, according to the report, the top spots in the ranking are again dominated by "well vaccinated" cities in Europe and Canada: Vienna is followed by Copenhagen, Zurich, Calgary, Vancouver and Geneva.
After Frankfurt, the top ten also includes Toronto and Amsterdam, as well as Osaka and Melbourne.
The Economist Intelligence Unit's regular rankings receive a lot of attention every year.
This time, a total of 172 major cities were compared according to criteria such as health care, culture, environment, education and infrastructure.
The stability factor is also evaluated - which is why Moscow and St. Petersburg lost a lot of quality of life as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine.
Kyiv was taken out of the ranking this year.
Tehran, Karachi, Tripoli and Lagos, among others, landed at the bottom of the ranking.
Syrian Damascus comes last.
