In the ZDF television garden, Andrea Kiewel announces a German musician.
She pays close attention to speaking gender-appropriately and explains that she must do so.
Later, ZDF commented on the moderator's choice of words.
"We as the Fernsehgarten team currently have the impression that a lot of positive things are going on in the German singer-songwriter scene," says Andrea Kiewel on Sunday afternoon on the ZDF television garden.
She does not pronounce the gender asterisk, but pauses briefly at this point.
The presenter then turns to a viewer next to her and explains: "Don't make a face, I have to!"

The gender discussion has been causing heated tempers for several months.
Some find it important to be inclusive and to appeal to all people - regardless of gender.
Others, such as Didi Hallervorden, see gender as a "violation of the German language" and resist any change.
Andrea Kiewel claims live on the show that she "must" change:

However, Andrea Kiewel seems to be very concerned about the topic.
After the broadcast, ZDF said at the request of the German Press Agency: "There are definitely no instructions for gendering in the 'ZDF TV Garden'.
Addressing everyone is a personal concern of Andrea Kiewel, which is why she used this formulation in connection with 'must'.”

The statement goes on to say: “ZDF would like to communicate in a non-discriminatory manner.
Editors and moderators decide for themselves which form of address is most suitable for the respective format." Kiwi himself confirms this statement according to Bild.de:
"I've been using the male and female plural for a long time because I really want to and it is very important to me!”
