"Adrian-Darya-1": Iranian tanker is said to have delivered oil in Syria

Britain expects that the Iranian oil tanker "Adrian-Darya-1" has delivered its cargo in Syria contrary to different claims from Tehran.

A few days ago it became known that the Iranian oil tanker "Adrian-Darya-1" has apparently headed for Syria. The Department of Foreign Affairs said that it had assumed that "Adrian-Darya-1" had delivered his cargo in Syria. The Iranian ambassador had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry, the statement said.

"The sale of oil to Assad's brutal regime is part of an Iranian government's behavioral pattern designed to undermine regional security," said British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab. Britain will raise the issue at the United Nations.

Iran is an important ally of Syria

The Iranian ship had been detained in Gibraltar for over six weeks on charges of undermining the EU embargo on Syria. The Supreme Court of the British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula finally freed the tanker after receiving assurances from Tehran that the ship would not extinguish its 2.1 million barrels of oil in Syria. Iran announced a few days later that they had sold the oil.

After that, the ship moved in the eastern Mediterranean. The captain initially stated that he wanted to go to Greece. Later it was said that it wanted to head for ports in Turkey. Earlier this week, the tanker apparently switched off the signal with which it can be located. At this time he was about 85 kilometers off the coast of Lebanon and Syria. There was no information about his destination.

The US has put pressure on all the Mediterranean states not to anchor the tanker. They try in conflict with Iran to bring its oil exports to zero. Tehran is an important ally of the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war.
