When the bullets sounded a few inches away, David Lex said he fell to the floor at a kosher grocery store in Jersey City, New Jersey, and when the two black-clad suspects pushed the door with the guns, he thought his life was nearing completion.

"I'm just grateful to have lived another day," Lex told ABC News last Thursday, two days after a man and woman carried out the attack on the city's kosher supermarket, and shot dead four people, one a police officer, before police eliminated them.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S.A. Gruell said the suspects were apparently driven by anti-Semitism and hatred of the law enforcement system, and that they marked the supermarket shortly after killing a Jersey police detective, Joseph Sales, 39, in a nearby cemetery. He added that "several hundred" pods of bullets were found at the site.

Lex said he was in the store around 12:30, arriving to buy lunch when he suddenly heard "lots of bangs" and added that it took him a moment to realize that the noise was shooting. "I thought my life was over," Lex said. "Bullets flew everywhere."

Investigators identified the shooters as David Anderson, 47, and Francine Graham, 50. Inside the store, 33-year-old Lea Mindel Franz, wife of grocery owner and mother of five, 24-year-old Moshe Deutsch, and a Miguel Douglas, 49, who worked in the store were killed.

"They came to kill and they didn't come to spare anyone," said Lex, who was the only person to leave the store alive. He said he fell to the floor when the suspect, Anderson, was holding what the authorities described as an AR-15 rifle, and stormed the shooting. "Like everyone else, I jumped on the floor," he said. When he tried to hide, he said, one of the shooters wearing a black raincoat walked past him and then got up only to face face-to-face attacker Graham, who he said was holding a shotgun.

When the attacker swung his rifle barrel toward him, he managed to keep the weapon away and ran toward the front door. "I thank God I had the courage, I had the right mind," Lex said. "I just moved her hand and left the store." He said he ran as fast as he could at zigzag and evaded shots fired at him.

As soon as he reached the road out into the street, he encountered a child near a nearby synagogue. "He's very brave, very smart," he said of the boy who looked alone. "We met on the street corner. I ran faster than him, so I walked past him and then I turned around and saw him. He started talking to me, so I said 'you know what, you come with me'."

Lex said that at the start of the shooting, Franz was sitting at the cash register, while Douglas was in the back of the store. He said that after he and the boy left the danger area, police arrived and a massive gunfire erupted.

Anderson and Graham were both shot dead at the scene by police "Obviously it's just a miracle that as far as I know it's hard to miss with a shotgun at such close range," said Lex who survived the attack.
