(CNN) - A North Carolina college student was arrested and charged after authorities found two guns in his bedroom and reportedly confessed that he planned to shoot.

Paul Arnold Steber, a 19-year-old freshman from High Point University, faces two serious crimes of weapons on campus or educational property and a charge of threat of mass violence, High Point police said. He was held without bail for 10 days, during which he must undergo a mental evaluation, police said.

Steber's lawyer did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comments.

Boston's Steber is one of dozens of suspects arrested for threats of mass attacks since the mass shootings this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. In the week after the shootings, the FBI received more than 38,000 tracks, compared to the usual 22,000 per week this year.

Steber was arrested Tuesday after other students told university officials that Steber had two guns and ammunition in his dormitory, police and university officials said in press releases.

Steber had a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a 12-caliber double-barrel shotgun, police said.

Paul Steber, 19, was planning a shooting at his university, police say.

He confessed to having "a timeline to 'kill people'," said WXII, a CNN affiliate, citing court documents.

Steber had allegedly been planning the attack since December, the district attorney's office said, according to WXII. He had recently watched videos related to the 2015 shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, in which nine people were killed so he could learn “what to do and what not to do in relation to mass shootings,” said the district attorney, according to WXII

Steber decided to attend college in North Carolina because he said it was easier to get weapons there, the district attorney's office said, according to WXII. He bought the weapons over the weekend, the prosecutor's office said, and it was not immediately clear if they were legally purchased.

Steber has no known criminal record, according to the district attorney's office. He appeared Wednesday in court by videoconference.

Chris Boyette of CNN contributed to this report.
