A leak of red wine of 97,000 gallons reached a river in northern California

(CNN) - A stream near a vineyard in Sonoma County, California, is now a little more 'refined' after more than 97,000 gallons of red wine spilled on Wednesday.

The fault was of a mixing tank door in the Rodney Strong Vineyards that opened, spilling 97,112 gallons, according to a report from the Governor's Emergency Services office.

Since then, the spill has stopped and 20% has been contained, but it is estimated that between 46,000 and 96,000 gallons have leaked into the Russian River, according to the report. The Russian River is born in Mendocino County and flows into the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco Bay.

There have been no reports of fish deaths, but the acidity of the wine is likely to kill the insects that the fish feed on, said Don McEnhill, executive director of Russian Riverkeeper.

CNN has contacted Rodney Strong Vineyards, Sonoma County and Sonoma County Water Agency for additional information.

Rodney Strong spokesman Chris O'Gorman told KGO, a CNN subsidiary, that the company is conducting an internal investigation and cooperating with the authorities.

"We are deeply concerned about this leak and protecting our waterways here in Sonoma County," he said.
