Can there be less pressure on the car tire?

A little less for more grip, a little more for less consumption: There are many views on air pressure in car tires. But manufacturers do not give their concrete recommendations without reason.

A little less for more grip, a little more for less consumption: There are many views on air pressure in car tires. But manufacturers do not give their concrete recommendations without reason.

Stuttgart (dpa / tmn) - Less pressure should bring better grip when driving - at least that's a widespread opinion. But it is not correct, explains the test organization Dekra.

On dry roads, the braking distance actually decreases with decreasing pressure on the tires. But at the same time, the precision of steering decreases, the car reacts sluggishly - and even becomes unpredictable at higher speeds.

On wet roads, it is even the other way around with the braking distance - this becomes shorter under such conditions with higher inflation pressure. In addition: If the tire pressure is below the optimum, the consumption increases.

Ultimately, you should always follow the recommendations of the car manufacturer, which depend on the load and are usually on stickers in the fuel filler flap or on the B-pillar by the driver's door, according to the experts. If the inflation pressure is significantly higher or lower than recommended, this usually has negative effects on the behavior of the tires.
