(CNN) - The world governing body of football, FIFA, ruled that the Cardiff City club must pay US $ 6,543,510 (6,000,000 euros) to the French team Nantes for the transfer of Emiliano Sala, the forward who died in a plane crash in the English Channel earlier this year.

Sala and pilot David Ibbotson were traveling from Nantes to Cardiff on January 21 when their plane crashed, two days after the transfer was agreed, according to FIFA.

The dispute between the two clubs focused on whether Sala was a Cardiff or Nantes player at the time of the plane trip, and if Cardiff would have to pay the transfer fee agreed by the clubs.

The 6 million euro fee corresponds to the first installment to be paid after the transfer was agreed, FIFA said.

Monday's ruling can be appealed to the Arbitration Court for Sport in Lausanne.

In August it was revealed that Sala and Ibbotson were exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide inside the plane before the accident.

Sala, who scored 42 goals for Nantes since joining since Bordeaux in 2015, had just signed with Cardiff, who has since descended from the Premier League, for an amount of 15 million pounds ($ 19.3 million) .

The 28-year-old was heading to his new club after saying goodbye to his teammates in France.
