Dead and missing: "Hagibis" leaves trail of devastation in Japan

2019-10-13T06:05:34.921Z

In Japan, one of the worst typhoons has been raging for decades. At least ten people were killed during the storm, and about a dozen others are missing. Many places are flooded.

In Japan, the extent of destruction by typhoon "Hagibis" is only slowly becoming visible. The storm had landed on Saturday near Tokyo and continued from there to the northeast. At least ten people were killed according to Reuters news agency. The news agency dpa speaks of at least fourteen dead. About a dozen people are missing.

Television networks showed aerial photographs of flooded residential areas in, among others, the most severely affected province of Nagano. In many other areas rivers had overflowed banks and dams broken, which flooded homes and streets.

Tens of thousands of households without electricity

Military helicopters and rubber dinghies have taken people from flooded homes to safety. In many places there were landslides, fallen trees blocked roads. In Tokyo's neighboring province of Chiba alone, where a typhoon raged last month and caused massive blackouts, a dozen houses were destroyed. More than 100,000 households were cut off from electricity supply on early Sunday. In other regions, too, there were power cuts in tens of thousands of households.

Japan: The force of the typhoon

The hurricane "Hagibis" (Philippine for "fast") was one of the most violent of the past decades. He moved from Tokyo to the region where a 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster had hit thousands of people. There, too, the typhoon caused severe flooding and landslides. As a result, the organizers of the current Rugby World Cup in Japan had to cancel another game. Concerned was the encounter Namibia against Canada, which was to take place in Kamaishi.

Because of the threat of massive rainfall, which threatened to become the worst in around 60 years, the authorities issued the highest alert for Tokyo and several other regions for the first time. More than six million people in the country were advised to escape the hurricane - which is simply called typhoon number 19 in Japan this season - in Japan.

Sun on Sunday in Tokyo

The sun was already shining in Tokyo on Sunday morning. There, and most parts of central and eastern Japan, evacuation orders were lifted on Sunday morning. However, the authorities warn against the risk of landslides and mudslides. According to the Ministry of Soil, Infrastructure and Tourism, at least 33 landslides and mudslides were reported in nine of the affected provinces.

In the bay of Tokyo, a cargo ship from Panama sank, anchoring there as the typhoon approached. A person on board was killed, four crew members were rescued on Sunday, as Japanese media reported. Seven people were missing.
