In Japan, the extent of destruction by typhoon "Hagibis" is only slowly becoming visible. The storm had landed on Saturday near Tokyo and continued from there to the northeast. At least ten people were killed according to Reuters news agency. The news agency dpa speaks of at least fourteen dead. About a dozen people are missing.
Television networks showed aerial photographs of flooded residential areas in, among others, the most severely affected province of Nagano. In many other areas rivers had overflowed banks and dams broken, which flooded homes and streets.
Tens of thousands of households without electricity
Military helicopters and rubber dinghies have taken people from flooded homes to safety. In many places there were landslides, fallen trees blocked roads. In Tokyo's neighboring province of Chiba alone, where a typhoon raged last month and caused massive blackouts, a dozen houses were destroyed. More than 100,000 households were cut off from electricity supply on early Sunday. In other regions, too, there were power cuts in tens of thousands of households.

Japan: The force of the typhoonThe hurricane "Hagibis" (Philippine for "fast") was one of the most violent of the past decades.
