You may have heard of jade rollers appearing lately, either in your local beauty salon or on Instagram. This product has become fashionable because it promises several benefits, including deflating the face, softening fine lines, reducing dark circles or soothing inflammation. But do they really keep these promises? The CNN Underscored team has spoken with an expert, and this is what you need to know.

Benefits of jade rollers

It turns out that, although it has become fashionable recently, using the jade roller is not a new concept. "Jade laminate has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine," says New York-based beautician Debra Krueger, owner of Debra Krueger Skin Studio. "The gemstone is used to extract negative energy and balance 'chi', which is also known as 'life force' or 'energy' in traditional Chinese medicine."

The idea behind this is quite simple: jade is relatively cold to the touch and has the ability to keep cool even when it comes in contact with the skin. "This cooling helps clear the complexion, reduce swelling, stimulate lymphatic drainage and promote blood circulation," says Krueger. “Healthy blood circulation transports oxygen to skin cells and will also help penetrate beauty products deeper into skin tissue. That way, it reduces fine lines and wrinkles. ”

People who use jade rollers also highlight their ability to help with lymphatic massages. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels that carry lymph, a fluid that contains white blood cells that fight infections throughout the body and helps eliminate excess water, toxins and other unwanted materials. Several studies suggest that lymphatic massages can help stimulate the lymphatic system, thus facilitating the elimination of toxic accumulations. Jade roller fans say this ability provides brighter skin, improved complexion and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

“The design of the roller itself helps, since it is a double-finished component, where one side is a large oval stone and the other side is a smaller circular stone. Different sizes allow adequate coverage in different areas of the face, ”says Krueger.

Do they work?

The technique is extremely important when using a jade roller. While it can be an effective treatment for skin at home, not using it the right way could end up doing more harm than good.

“It is important to start with a clean and fresh face with the serum you choose. Use medium pressure and take it easy, ”says Krueger.

Here is the step by step guide:

Neck: “I like working from my neck up. Use the large oval side and roll up and down the neck, and from side to side with medium pressure, to start the lymphatic system. ”

Jaw line: “Still using the large oval side, move it into the jaw bone (jaw line). Start in the center of the chin. Work from the middle of the chin to the earlobe and make five or six passes in each area. Repeat in the other side."

Front: “Then, move to the forehead, using the larger oval side. Start in the center. Work from the center to the outer temples, make five or seven passes and repeat on the other side. Then change the direction. Starting at the eyebrows, move up to the hairline. ”

Eyes: “Using the smallest end with medium pressure, turn gently from the inner corner to the outer corner, toward the brow bone. Be sure to cover the area under the eyes and crow's feet. Roll back and forth, about 10 times. Repeat in the other side."

It is also important to keep in mind that, like many other skin care trends, a jade roller is not for everyone . "I would avoid using the roller if you have any type of skin rash or cold sores, and people with acne should also avoid it, since the jade roller can spread bacteria," says Krueger. "You should also make sure to disinfect the roller with a mild soap between uses."

The best jade rollers

Since there are so many options on the market, choosing the right jade roller is always a challenge, especially since not all are legitimate. "If you're spending less than $ 20 on a roll, it's probably false," says Krueger. " There are many chemically stained and polished stones to imitate jade ."

Each person's skin is different, so it is difficult to predict how a jade roller could work for a specific skin type. Using these tips, however, the jade roller will soon become your new favorite skin tool. Here are some of Krueger's recommendations.
