NEW DELHI - At least 113 people have been killed in floods triggered by heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi-Sana

At least 113 people have been killed in floods triggered by heavy rains that have ravaged northern India's Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states over the past three days.

At least 93 people have been killed in Uttar Pradesh since Friday after heavy monsoon rains hit eastern districts, while high water levels drove 900 prisoners from a prison in the eastern Balea region, police officer Santosh Verma said.

A government official in the neighboring state of Bihar said the death toll from the floods had reached 20 so far.

Patna, the capital of Bihar, home to about 2 million people, was also badly damaged as heavy rain flooded many streets, entered homes, shops and a large hospital, and authorities in some parts deployed boats to save residents.

A previous death toll from the floods had indicated that at least 58 people had been killed in the two states and thousands had been taken to camps.
