After Montpellier, released a few tens of minutes earlier by Belfort on penalties, and Angers, dominated by Stade Rennais after a completely crazy game (5-4 after extra time), another Ligue 1 resident bit the dust in the 8th final of the Coupe de France this Tuesday. Beaten (0-1) at home by Saint-Etienne, Monaco leaves the competition.
As strange as it may seem, it has been thirty-six years since these two clubs had not faced each other in competition. The last time was in the 1974 final, and the Greens of Jean-Michel Larqué won (2-1) at the Parc des Princes, for the fourth double championship-cup in their history.
Today things have changed. Struggling in the championship, Saint-Etienne (15th), who remains on a success in the championship against Nîmes, will have to fight to avoid a painful end of the season. It is hardly better for Monaco, only 11th, which has just lost for the 3rd consecutive time on its lawn after PSG (1-4) and Strasbourg (1-3) in the championship.
Wissam Ben Yedder, the top scorer in the championship (14 goals), however tried everything, but Stéphane Ruffier held out in his cages (18th, 39th, 50th). The Stéphane release came in the middle of the first period, when Denis Bouanga found himself strangely alone at the far post of Benjamin Lecomte (24th).
