(CNN Spanish) - National Civil Police agents arrested Sandra Torres, former presidential candidate for the National Unity of Hope party on Monday in Guatemala City, confirmed a CNN team at the scene.

Torres is investigated by the Public Ministry for alleged illicit financing in 2015. According to the Special Prosecutor Against Impunity in Guatemala, while Torres was the general secretary of the UNE party - from January to June 2015 - he received millionaire contributions for his election campaign, sum which according to the authorities amounts to 19.5 million quetzals, about 2.5 million dollars. This amount was not notified to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, as reported by the Public Ministry.

MIRA: Is candidate Sandra Torres protected?

Torres has denied the accusations against him and has said that the complaint has political purposes.

The ex-candidate must be presented before the courts of justice and appear before the judge who ordered her detention.

As reported by the Public Ministry on his Twitter account, the arrest warrant against Torres for crimes of unregistered electoral financing and illegal association was issued last Friday.

Torres had an arrest warrant issued last Friday by the Highest Risk Court A, for the crimes of unregistered electoral financing and illegal association.
