TOKYO (AP) - A powerful typhoon struck Tokyo early Friday, with heavy winds and heavy rains in unprecedented amounts

Tokyo-Sana

A powerful typhoon struck Tokyo at dawn today, with heavy winds and torrential rains in unprecedented amounts.

Typhoon Vaxay entered the Japanese mainland with strong winds off the coast of Chiba southwest of the capital after crossing the Gulf of Tokyo, Kyodo news agency said.

Authorities issued non-mandatory evacuation orders for areas of more than 390,000 people, with wind speeds and rainfall expected to reach record levels.

The cyclone cut power to about 300,000 homes and damaged dozens of homes in Shizuoka, near Tokyo, where windows were shattered and cars overturned.

Japan's Meteorological Agency called on residents to be "wary of storms, strong waves, landslides, floods and flooded rivers."

The railway company announced the cancellation of about 100 high-speed train trips linking Tokyo to central and western cities and ferry traffic in the Gulf of Tokyo was halted.
