Who will become Chancellor candidate of the Union? Even to the West African Mali party leader Kramp-Karrenbauer pursued this question. With reference to the previous practice, the CDU chairman sees a primary election skeptical.

The CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer advises her party against leaving the decision on the Chancellor candidate of the base.

The CDU has "always said with good reasons that it does not follow this path," said Kramp-Karrenbauer the broadcasters RTL and n-tv during a trip abroad in their capacity as Defense Minister in West African Mali.

As party leader Kramp-Karrenbauer would have the first access to the candidacy. Due to weak poll numbers, however, the CDU is discussing a membership decision in the K question and possible alternatives to Kramp-Karrenbauer.

Union parties: These are the possible K candidates

The unrest in the party on the primary election debate meanwhile held: The party Vice Julia Klöckner and Thomas Strobl demanded an end to the view of her harmful discussion.

Klöckner told the spark newspapers that she saw "no reason to debate chancellor candidates at the present time." Her colleague Strobl warned: "A primary election is always accompanied by a week or even months of self-employment."

The debate was set in motion by the youth development organization Junge Union. At its annual meeting this weekend, it wants to vote on whether to submit a petition for the primary election of the chancellor candidate at the federal party convention in November.

Kramp-Karrenbauer made clear on Tuesday that she wanted to face the debate. "The Junge Union has always been free to make its own motions," Kramp-Karrenbauer said. One must therefore "wait for the decision on the Germany Day and then possibly also a debate at the party congress."

According to current planning, the CDU wants to nominate the chancellor candidate or the chancellor candidate for the 2021 general election at the party congress in late 2020. Kramp-Karrenbauer leaves open so far whether she wants to take over the candidacy - in the ZDF "heute journal" she dodged on Monday evening a corresponding question. But she had repeatedly made it clear that she intended to direct the naming process as party leader.
