Berlin (dpa) - The German U21 national team coach Stefan Kuntz expects visible effects from the changes to the training system in German football only in a few years.

"It will take many years for us to benefit from these developments," said Kuntz, who currently has to pause with his U21 due to the Corona crisis, just like all other teams.

"The measures that were taken at the beginning of the 2000s - if you take the World Cup victory as a benchmark - took 14 years," said Kuntz of the German Press Agency, referring to the changes in German football after the Euro 2000. Back then Germany was eliminated last in the group in the preliminary round.

Kuntz urged prudence. "First you have to wait and see what exactly is decided," he said. With the "Project Future" launched last year, the German Football Association wants to return to the top of the world. However, not all of the project's measures have yet been decided and implemented. "That will probably only take eight, nine, ten years to come into play," said Kuntz. "Until then, we have to try to soften the dent that is coming."
