(Expansion) - The famous Mexican historian and philosopher Miguel León-Portilla died at 93 years of age, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) confirmed on Tuesday night.
The doctor and researcher died at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán, where he was admitted last July.
In his social networks, the highest house of studies in the country lamented the death of his emeritus researcher, whom he described as an "illustrious university student, humanist, teacher of teachers."
After the news was announced, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, expressed on social networks that the academic was a strong defender of native cultures and published dozens of books such as "The vision of the defeated."

In mid-September, the Mexican government, through the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), recognized the legacy of the Mexican historian, anthropologist, humanist and linguist for his contributions to the historiographic work and culture of the native peoples of the country .
Since then, León-Portilla already had health complications, so that in his representation, his wife Ascension Hernández Triviño received the Nezahualcóyotl Medal as "a reference of cultural expressions, of the philosophy and language of indigenous cultures."
In 1995, León-Portilla received the Belisario Domínguez Medal, the highest award granted by the Senate of the Republic to the most eminent citizens.
Since 1971, the philosopher was a member of the National Council - an institution that brings together the most prominent Mexican scientists, artists and writers in the country - earning that place with the paper 'History and historians in ancient Mexico'.
