Already badly embarked on his Parisian adventure, Benjamin Griveaux withdrew his candidacy after the publication of a compromising video.

Benjamin Griveaux's campaign comes to an abrupt end. The candidate of La République en Marche withdrew his candidacy this Friday after the dissemination of a compromising video of a sexual nature on the Internet and relayed on social networks. Embedded in an already badly embarked campaign, marked by numerous taunts, the former government spokesperson judged that "a new stage had been crossed" with this leak. Le Figaro looks back at the five main episodes of Benjamin Griveaux's nightmarish campaign.

● July 2019: insults from Griveaux against his opponents leak in the press

These invectives should never have been known, and yet ... In mid-July, a week after his appointment by LREM to lead the campaign in Paris, Benjamin Griveaux saw some of his unwelcome remarks against his opponents fleeing in an article in Le Point . The former government spokesperson describes in particular the Vice-President of the National Assembly, Hugues Renson, as "son of p ..." . Concerning the mathematician Cédric Villani, he believes that “he does not have the shoulders to cash a campaign of this nature. He won't see the bullets coming, he's going to be boned. ” The candidate LREM also dwells on the case of Pierre-Yves Bournazel, the deputy Agir who will join him in January: "Who has Bournazel by the c ... from the start, if not me?" Why are we bringing (Franck) Riester (d'Agir) into government? To keep the guys at Agir, all of this is not a coincidence! ”. The entourage of Benjamin Griveaux had denounced this leak resulting from a "private conversation" .

● September 2019: the dissidence of Cédric Villani

"I am announcing to you, this September 4, that I have decided to be a candidate in the next election of the mayor of Paris!" . These words, pronounced proudly by Cédric Villani, resound like a thunderclap for Benjamin Griveaux and his teams. The mathematician MP ignored the mid-July decision of the investiture committee and decided to try his luck against the former government spokesperson. By assuming his dissent, the member for Essonne takes with him some members of LREM, including Hugues Renson. No Macronie executive, starting with Emmanuel Macron, succeeds in bringing Cédric Villani into line. The division will increase throughout the campaign.

● December 2019: Dati catches up and double Griveaux in the polls

While Benjamin Griveaux skates, Rachida Dati takes off. In a poll commissioned by Cédric Villani teams, the candidate, who is not even invested by LR, is given shoulder to shoulder in early December with the former government spokesperson. With 17% of the voting intentions, the two are still far behind the outgoing mayor Anne Hidalgo (22.5%). A month later, at the end of January, Rachida Dati finally widened the gap. In an Odoxa poll for CGI and Le Figaro , the former Keeper of the Seals now accounts for 20% of voting intentions, when the macronist collapses to third position at 16%.

● January 2020: Griveaux is crumbling under the taunts after having proposed a “Central Park” in Paris

To try to bounce back, Benjamin Griveaux tries to bring out flagship proposals. The candidate proposes for example to "move the Gare de l'Est" to create a "Parisian Central Park" . The idea aroused immediately under the taunts of his opponents and even among some of his own camp. Many denounce an "unrealistic" project, an "ineptitude" and "nonsense" . "I propose to move the Gare de Lyon to Lyon, so the train journey will be shorter" , quips Emmanuel Grégoire, Anne Hidalgo's first PS assistant.

● February 2020: The "ignoble" leak of a sexual video

His revelation had the effect of a sledgehammer. In mid-February, a very compromising sexual video concerning Benjamin Griveaux was shot on social networks. It's the drop of water that makes the vase overflow. "For more than a year, my family and I have been subjected to defamatory statements, lies, anonymous attacks, the revelation of secret private conversations, and death threats. This torrent of mud affected me, and it mostly hurt those I love, ” he lamented in a short speech broadcast on BFMTV. "As if that were not enough, a new stage was crossed yesterday and a website and social networks relayed vile attacks threatening my privacy," continued Benjamin Griveaux before announcing that he was withdrawing his candidacy.
