Pensions: Jean-Luc Mélenchon wants to launch a censure motion against the government

He wants to integrate the different movements of the left in this vote. This Tuesday, the leader of the rebellious deputies, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, announced to the press his intention to propose to the left the tabling of a motion of censure against the government. Objective: to once again denounce his pension reform project.

"The rebels intend to propose to their comrades in the Communist Party and the group of socialists to table together a motion of censure" and thus engage "the responsibility of the Prime Minister," said Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

A “hole” project

Pleading that a “political initiative” is necessary, he deemed the situation “most strange” on the parliamentary level concerning the reform, denouncing a project with “holes” in the absence of the funding component, and a “coup de force” ". He also said that the censure motion would ensure that "Parliament has a role other than the miserable and reduced role of deliberating on a text in which there are gaps".

To be able to be deposited, a motion of censure must gather 58 signatures among the 577 deputies. LFI, which has 17, must therefore rally the other left groups. The three groups had overcome their divisions at the end of 2018 to file a joint censure motion in connection with the yellow vests crisis, or in July of the same year on the Benalla affair.

Over 100 censure motions have been tabled since 1958. Only one was passed in 1962, bringing down the government of Georges Pompidou.
