Recommendations for parents: Wonderful picture books for children from the age of three

2019-09-22T16:46:41.022Z

What is nicer than cuddling up with a child in the corner of the sofa and reading a good picture book? Here are three illustrated recommendations: to fall asleep, cycling learning - and dispute resolution.

The products recommended here were selected subjectively but editorially independently. About the so-called affiliate links in the text receives the publisher, but never authors individually, for sales a small commission from the dealer. More information here.

When I turned three, my grandfather gave me "The Caterpillar Nimmersatt" with the dedication "My little Agnes to Joy". This is not only terribly sweet, but has come true far beyond my childhood. Even as an adult, I enjoy great picture books. I associate Eric Carles classics with beautiful reading lessons and the riddle of what is probably a fruitcake.

The child I once was is still very close to me. That's why leafing through a well-composed picture book amuses me like a beautiful melody. Book covers and illustrations are the main characters at best, but without good interaction with the story, it's all ashes. The most beautiful are funny stories with surprising twists, because children like to laugh. I am grateful if the text is not full of boring explanations and unnecessary adjectives. Then you have to omit passages or exchange words when reading aloud. And they notice that

Children no later than the second time, if you do not read it again.

Luckily, there are still many picture-book classics to buy - and pearls are constantly appearing among the new releases. With these three books, you are sure to make a child and yourself happy:

"Softly through the night"

This large-format picture book has just been released and immediately cast a spell on me. The story is mainly told by atmospheric pictures, the text remains in the background. The illustrations, primarily in dark blue tones, allow us to experience the world at night without being scary. Everything is quiet and very different than usual.

What's going on here? The book tells the actually simple story of a family that sets out on a hike at dawn. Arrived at the destination something wonderful happens. You want to start walking right away.

Best Reading Time: To fall asleep. A good book to come down to after an exciting day. In the end you can look forward to the next morning when the sun rises again.

Recommended age : from 3 years.

" No, Lotta can ride a bike"

For me, Ilon Wikland is one of the greatest illustrators. The Swedish idyll and her expressive children's figures are a perfect match for Astrid Lindgren's stories. No wonder they made so many books together. The more difficult it is to select one of them. Representing all the smart, funny picture books of the two I decided in the end for a Lotta band, which I have often read to my much younger sisters and who connects me with them today.

What's going on here? Lotta is a cool sock of almost five years living with her family in a small town somewhere in Sweden. Here the world is still fine. Well, except for the fact that Lotta can not ride a bike yet. Of course, that's why her big siblings like to annoy her. As always, Lotta knows how to help but has not thought it through.

Best time to read: If something went wrong. And of course before cycling learning.

Recommended age : from 4 years.

"When my hair grows long"

A good children's book says something without saying it. For example, how beautiful you are. Or that everything is possible. The Japanese Hoko Takadono has put these thoughts in a funny story and beautifully illustrated to the kneeling. We adults are jealous of the carelessness that is in the children.

I also like the touch of Japan that lies above this timeless book. The Japanese title is "Ma-chan no nagai kami", which summarizes the content quite well: The long hair of the little Ma.

What's going on here? Hana, short hair, and her friends Mari and Emi, long hair, sit together with a glass of lemonade on a summer's day and philosophize about the pros and cons of long hair. The friends are amazed at the truly fantastic life that Hana will have with long hair and are looking forward to her without envy. This is so beautiful.

Best reading time: always. But maybe it is useful if there was a dispute?

Recommended age : from 3 years.
