Two oil plants in Saudi Arabia have been attacked by state media, according to drones. Fire had broken out in the facilities of the Aramco state company in Abkaik and Churais, according to the Saudi Arabian news agency SPA, citing the Ministry of Interior. The fires are now under control, said a spokesman for Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry. He did not say who was responsible for the attacks.
The plant in Abkaik, in the east of the country claims to be the largest oil processing plant in the world. The oil refinery had previously been the target of an attack by the terrorist organization Al-Quaida. The 190 kilometers further southwestern Churais has the second largest oil field in the country.
By mid-May, drone attacks had been carried out on two oil pumping stations near Riyadh. Aramco temporarily suspended operations on its east-west pipeline for safety reasons. Back then, the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi rebels from neighboring Yemen claimed responsibility for the attacks.
