Savings: will booklet A remain the preferred investment for the French in 2020?

2020-01-14T07:11:21.298Z

2019 was an exceptional year from the collection point of view for passbook A, but its remuneration could drop as early as February.

Today, it still reports 0.75%. And the 55 million open A passbooks remain the preferred placement of the French. But for how long? The rate of this savings product could drop on February 1. This possibility was mentioned by François Villeroy de Galhau, the Governor of the Banque de France. Specifically, its new calculation formula, partially fixed on inflation, should cut its yield from 0.75% to 0.35%. AIE Aie Aie…

But don't break your A booklet right away! First, because its formula also provides for a floor rate at 0.50%. Second, because the prospect of municipal elections in March could convince the government to do nothing. Whatever happens, "passbook A will continue to attract savings from the French," said François Chaulet, the managing director of Montségur Finance, a wealth management company. This is all the more so since the life insurance contracts in euro funds are reaching very low yields, which bring them closer to those of the Livret A. ”

14 billion euros deposited on passbooks A in 2019

Keep a book A, really, when other investments, without risk, are more profitable? With a rate at 0.50% or 0.75%, while inflation targets are around 1.7% in 2020, savers ... will lose purchasing power by placing their savings on a passbook A Yes but ... "The Livret A remains rather profitable compared to the reality of the market because, while maintaining a positive rate, it is safe for capital and particularly liquid ( Editor's note: it allows you to quickly dispose of your money) " , highlights François Chaulet. In short, in these times of financial uncertainty, the favorite placement of the French serves as woolen socks. 2019 was an exceptional year in terms of inflows, savers having deposited more than 14 billion euros in their passbooks (i.e. a jump of almost 50% over a year).

"In France, where savers are particularly allergic to risk and volatility, the booklet A is attractive despite its low yield", explains Julien-Pierre Nouen, director of economic studies at Lazard Frères Gestion, one of the world leaders in consulting financial. Presumably, this should last in 2020. "The Livret A remains the ideal instrument for managing your precautionary savings," insists Ludovic Arnaud, the president of Next Financial Partners, an investment consulting company. However, experts recommend that those who can afford it no longer put it on the ceiling (€ 22,950), as it was used before.
