Savoie: an instructor in training dies in a heli-skiing accident

This 46-year-old monitor from La Rosière station died Tuesday shortly after being dropped off by helicopter.


The accident occurred during heli-skiing training. A 46-year-old ski instructor fell deadly from a rocky bar at Mont Miravidi (Savoy) Tuesday around noon, we learned from the rescue gendarmes in charge of the investigation.

The practice of removing skiers by helicopter is prohibited in France but authorized in Italy or Switzerland. The instructor, who worked at the French ski school (ESF) of the resort of La Rosière, in the French-Italian ski area, had been dropped off on the Italian side, said the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) .

Hooked by the basket

"It was after being deposited that the monitor was hung by the basket (part of the helicopter where the equipment is placed, editor's note)," said the PGHM. He was then taken down and fell several hundreds of meters. "He jumped a rocky bar and was found in a snow corridor on the west face of Mount Miravidi", French side, on the territory of the town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, said the PGHM.

The gendarmes of the PGHM are co-seized of the investigation with the research section of Chambéry on the circumstances of the accident. According to Le Dauphiné libéré, a psychological cell will be open on Wednesday for monitors at the La Rosière station.
