The alleged perpetrator of Halle is permeated by xenophobia and anti-Semitism - of which Attorney General Peter Frank is convinced. He speaks of an act of terrorism.

Attorney General Peter Frank announced new details on the Halle attack on Thursday. The alleged perpetrator Stephan Balliet is therefore accused of double murder and nine times attempted murder. "What we experienced yesterday was terror," said Frank at a press conference in Karlsruhe. The suspect is a person who is deeply penetrated by xenophobia and anti-Semitism. "He has seen himself in a tradition of comparable assassins," said Frank.

The suspect had not only imitated his own actions, he also wanted to instigate other people to similar attacks, Frank said. "He wanted to achieve a worldwide impact." For that purpose, he had streamed his deeds and given descriptions of the weapon and the explosive. In the car of the offender, a total of four kilos of explosives were secured in numerous explosive devices. He would be presented to a magistrate on Thursday.

Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) commented on Thursday on the act. She spoke of a "right-wing extremist terrorist attack" of a single offender. The alleged shooter acted for anti-Semitic and right-wing extremist reasons.

Lambrecht described right-wing extremism as one of the biggest threats currently facing the rule of law. Right-wing extremism is increasingly violent and aggressive in Germany, said Lambrecht. The breeding ground often begins first with words, followed by deeds.

Balliet had on conviction of the investigators on Wednesday trying to penetrate into a synagogue in Halle. His attempt failed, after which he shot dead two people in front of the synagogue and then in a nearby snack and injured at least two others.
