(CNN Spanish) - Mothers of detained protesters and activists who were on a hunger strike for nine days, as a way to demand the freedom of their relatives, were evacuated this Friday afternoon from the San Miguel Church in Masaya, with the support of the Red Cross, and the management of the Apostolic Nuncio Waldemar Sommertag and Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, Archbishop of Managua, as reported by Juan Sebastián Chamorro, director of the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy.

Relatives of the rescued say they were taken in an ambulance to a private hospital south of Managua in the company of Father Edwin Román, adding that after being stabilized they will perform tests to determine their health condition.

“The mothers came out under a management of the Catholic church. They left in ambulances and came here to the Metropolitan hospital. The report just given by doctors is that they are stable. Some of them have gastritis, which is to be expected in an episode of prolonged fasting, some cases of asthma and hypertension, but in general they are stable, ”explained Chamorro.

Hours earlier, a group of 12 people, including mothers of activists arrested on Thursday and leaders of the opposition Civic Alliance and Blue and White National Unit, was held by Nicaraguan police in a minibus, in which they were heading towards the city from Masaya, Chamorro said at the time,

The detainees, according to Chamorro, brought water to the mothers of demonstrators deprived of liberty who were on hunger strike in the San Miguel church.

CNN tried to know the causes of the retention and transfer of the activists, back to the capital, but the police public relations chief, commissioner César Cuadra, does not respond to our calls.

We also communicate with Idania Castillo, liaison with the international press of the Communication Council coordinated by Vice President Rosario Murillo, but they do not respond to our requests for information.

The complainants say that when they arrived at Masaya, the police confiscated water and medicines, which, they point out, photographed as if it were a drug seizure.
